WILL Australian audiences be treated to a similarly intimate live experience in March?
Airing last week on American broadcaster PBS as a part of ACL (Austin City Limits) Festival, Kendrick Lamar transformed a medley of songs from two of his critically acclaimed albums, good kid, m.A.A.d. city and To Pimp A Butterfly, from masterfully produced ride alongs through Compton to the tightest jazz fusion 5-piece in modern hip-hop. Delicately marauding through crowd favourites Swimming Pools and m.A.A.d. city, lacking perhaps the enraged energy of the pressed recordings in this finessed set-up, still managed to whip the crowd into a blur of hands-in-the-air, frenzied joy.
Taped in the middle of Lamar’s Kunta’s Groove Session sees the rapper perform with backing band Wesley Theory, comprised of Tony Chicago and speculatively other members of his reoccurring touring crew. Reported however, the band would pertain to exist in this setting for only the eight gigs during these selected groove sessions, I’m sure to not be alone in hope the Wesley Theory will be gracing our shores too. Watch the full performance and check out his ACL setlist below.
